The Fylde
The Fylde, for those who ain't from round here, is a low-lying coastal plain in west Lancashire. Bounded by Morecambe Bay to the north, the river Ribble to the south and the Irish Sea to the West it enjoys high rainfalls that create lush pastures that in their turn make it an ideal place for grazing dairy cattle and producing delicious milk. Indeed the name "Fylde" is derived from a Scandinavian word for "field". The Fylde has seen its reputation for fine food products grow immensely in recent years and some of our local producers have cemented worldwide reputations with the quality of their products.
Ten years ago we would have been ridiculed for using the word "terroir" to describe anything other than the place of origin of French wine. On the Fylde today most producers would say that their products are excellent largely because of the area in which they're produced - the climate, the soil and the terrain of the Fylde.
